Phone interviews are often used for screening applications and to save time. However, when it comes to PERM advertising requirements in the Bay Area, the phone interview may just be one of them. Indeed, when one has most of their candidates quite far away, like it is in the case of posting requirements for PERM advertising in the Bay Area.
Is It a Good Idea?
Performing a phone interview is very often a good idea since it can make the hiring process smoother. Indeed, it is great because it doesn’t take as long as a regular interview would take, especially thinking of the commute for the candidate. In PERM advertising in the Bay Area, it is a requirement, since having an individual fly over just for an interview is not the best thing, especially in the beginning part of the process. It only takes about 15 minutes for an employer to check whether the candidate has understood the job very well and whether their expectations regarding salary are reasonable. One can also ask quickly about any gaps in the resume.
During the phone interview, if a candidate mentions a specific figure, one should be sure to write it down, so that they can later ask about it. If they offer the same figure, it is likely that it is accurate.
This goes for the employer. Indeed, it is very important to make sure that one listens more than they speak, since the whole point of an interview is to learn more about the candidate, not to hear oneself talking.
Schedule 15 Minutes, but Make Time for 60
As previously mentioned, most phone interviews last no longer than 15 minutes. However, in some cases, if the candidate is especially good, one may want to spend more time to dive deeper into certain aspects. If this is the case, it would be a shame if one would be unable to do it because of time constraints.
While it may be an obvious tip, many people ignore it, because they are under the impression that they will be able to remember everything. However, after having quite a few of these types of interviews, it is highly unlikely that one will be able to remember everything, which is why it is recommended that one takes very detailed notes, so that they will have something to look back on later. This is very helpful for when one is going to try and figure out which one of a few different candidates is likely to be the better match.
